La Olmeda is a Roman villa located between Leon and Burgos. |
It contains many high quality mosaics. |
The villa was originally occupied from the 1st to 3rd century. |
Another villa, and most of the mosaics, were made in the 4th century and used until the 6th century. |
The ruins of La Olmeda were discovered by a farmer in 1968. |
The area is believed to have been at its height of prosperity under Diocletian, Constantine, and Theodosius I. |
Invasions by Germanic tribes eventually led to the dissolution of the Roman estate. |
The facility housing the site was completed in 2009. |
