Burgos

Burgos was the capital of Castile before it dominated the Iberian peninsula.

Burgos was founded in 884 to be the capital of the County of Castile under the Kingdom of Asturias.

Burgos Cathedral was built over hundreds of years, starting in 1221.

Play it again Sam.

The County of Castile obtained independence on and off from the Kingdom of Leon.

Pretty metal

In the 11th century Burgos became the capital of the Kingdom of Castile.

The Kingdoms of Castile and Leon unified in the 12th century, with Burgos as the capital.

El Cid is buried in Burgos Cathedral.

Maybe this gate didn't need faces on it.

A door with the coats of arms of Castile and Leon

An odd feature in many Spanish Cathedrals are these little hairy men.

It wouldn't be a prominent cathedral on the way of St. James without him slaying some Moors.

Each Spanish cathedral you visit it more impressive than the last, a hard feat.

The Arco de Santa Maria was rebuilt by Charles the V after the city supported him during the Revolt of the Comuneros.

Burgos is home to many other hundreds year old churches.

Some of their treasures rival Burgos Cathedral.

Roman tombs

A Roman mosaic from the 4th century

I'd be surprised if this piece of Santo Domingo's urn from the 12th century wasn't Limoges enamel.

And this.

Another Moorish container (from the 10th century) Christianized.

A 15th century Mudejar door

El Cid's Tizona sword

El Cid!

Castile respects its storks.

They can make their home wherever they wish.
