Yuste Monastery

Yuste Monastery was founded in 1402 by the Hieronymite Order.

Charles V retired here in 1556 after dividing his empire. His son Philip II became King of Spain, and his brother Ferdinand I became Holy Roman Emperor.

Charles V grew up in Burgundy, and spent far more time fighting wars and ruling outside Spain than in it. It was surprising when the most powerful man of his time abdicated and decided to move to the remote monastery in Spain.

The monastery was enlarged to house his ~50 person attendants.

Charles V was originally buried here, then later moved to the Royal Monastery at El Escorial.

Yuste Monastery is definitely a peaceful place.
