El Escorial was built by Philip II as a monastery, palace, and necropolis. It is the largest Renaissance era building in the world, and located 45 kilometers northwest of Madrid.
El Escorial houses the tombs of every Spanish king since Charles V. You can't take pictures in El Escorial, but you can take pictures in the Courtyard of the Kings.
There is also a cute town next to El Escorial, called San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
The entire town was filled with nativity statues.
Not all the statues were anatomically correct.
How many nativity scenes have Romans AND flamingos?
Here come the kings
Herod and or Ponitus Pilate, take your pick.
We also had some pretty good seafood paella in town with a local Rose.
What a ceiling!
The Valley of the Fallen is also next to El Escorial. Franco built the basilica as a memorial to the Spanish Civil War; his remains were recently removed from the site.
