Shkoder

Shkoder is a large historic city in North Albania. Rozafa Castle overlooks the city and Lake Shkoder.

Shkoder is surrounded by three rivers and the largest lake in southern Europe; most of the area around the city is a wetland.

Shkoder submitted to Venetian rule in the 14th century for protection against the Ottomans. The Venetians built Rofaza Castle to protect the city, but the Ottomans still took over the strategic site in the 15th century.

Montenegro and the Ottoman Empire fought over Shkoder in the early 1900s. Ultimately the majority Albanian population gained control of the city.

Montenegro and Albania share control of Lake Shkoder.

The Illyrians fought and lost to the Romans at Shkoder in the 2nd century B.C.

The castle is surrounded by the Buna and Drin rivers.
