Blagaj is famous for the Sufi dervish lodge built at the mouth of the Buna river spring. The town is a 30 minute drive from Mostar. |
The lodge was originally built in the 16th century, and has been improved throughout the following centuries. |
The restaurants before the lodge require some bravery to patronize. |
Blagaj has been ruled by Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Serbians, Bosnians, Ottomans, and Austrians. |
The spring is still going strong. |
The lodge is an excellent spiritual retreat. |
The Bektashi and Khalwatiyyah orders both resided in the lodge. Sufi orders were banned in Yugoslavia in 1952. |
