Aigai

Aigai was the original capital of the Macedonians, located in the modern town of Vergina. All Macedonian kings before Alexander the Great were buried there.

The Great Tumulus was first excavated in 1977 and four tombs were discovered.

Two undisturbed tombs were discovered, including Philip II's tomb.

The undisturbed tombs are unsettling. As you walk down to them you feel like you are walking toward a door to the underworld.

The treasure in the tombs is priceless.

A gold Macedonian larnax and crown

And another

Remains of a funerary couch

Philip's funerary greaves and quiver

A painting of the rape of Persephone from one of the tombs

The other undisturbed tomb is thought to be Alexander IV's tomb. Cassander ordered him killed at 14 to eliminate threats to his rule of Macedon after Alexander the Great's death.
