Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre, a UNESCO site, consists of five towns along the Ligurian Coast near Genoa. La Spezia is a city nearby that serves as a good base camp to explore the area, even if it is a little run down.

You encounter all sorts of oddities hiking between the towns of Cinque Terre you'd miss if you traveled by train.

We took the train from La Spezia to Levanto to start our hike.

Monterosso is the biggest of the five towns and has some great gelato.

Vernazza is my favorite Cinque town.

It was an old fishing village with fortifications to protect it from pirates.

A pretty odd cat.

A pretty odd cat indeed.

Porto Venere, just outside of La Spezia, is not part of Cinque Terre, but is amazing in its own right. The various churches and forts were built between 1000-1400.
