52 Tunnels

The Road of 52 Tunnels is a popular hiking trail in the Dolomites.
Rifugio Passo Xomo is a 15 minute walk from the trailhead and a good place to park.

If you're lucky you can snag a spot next to the trailhead.

A WW1 watchtower is in the distance.
The road was built during WWI to support Italian operations against Austria during the many battles of the Isonzo.

It became a critical supply route that was defended by artillery positions built into the tunnels.

It can get pretty dark, damp, and claustrophobic. Bring a flashlight!

The trail has some pretty steep drop offs too.

Yes, there are actually 52 tunnels.

It can get pretty dark in them.

Pitch dark.

Tunnel 19 is the longest tunnel. Luckily it has some holes to let light in.

The trail is about four miles, and takes around two hours to complete.

Rifugio Achille Papa is the popular place to grab a beer and bite to eat at the end of the trail.

The trail down the other side of the mountain is a mile or two longer, but only takes about an hour and 30 minutes to hike.
