Olite

Olite is home of the Palace of the Kings of Navarre

A Roman fort originally occupied the site.

King Sancho VII of Navarre built on top of the fort in the 13th century.

The castle fell into disrepair after Navarre was conquered by Castile in the 15th century.

The Spanish Viceroy of Navarre lived there until the 1800s.

The castle was intentionally destroyed by the Spanish during the Peninsular War.

The Spanish started rebuilding it after the Spanish Civil War over 100 years later.

Today the castle also houses a Parador, of course.

Olite is a great place to visit just outside of Pamplona!
